Your prayers are asked for those killed and injured in Washington DC today, and for all of their families and friends. God bless them and keep them, and may Peace prevail on earth.

DEDICATION OF THE PEACE POLE
Church of the Good Shepherd 9-15-13

A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages on each of its sides. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in nearly every country in the world dedicated as monuments to peace.

Today as we dedicate our Peace Pole, let us recall the Prophets, Evangelists, and Apostles who proclaimed the Good News of the Love and Peace of God in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hear the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “A child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Saint Luke recounts the song of the heavenly host, praising God at the birth of Christ, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth!” Luke 1:14

Hear also the words of the risen Lord Jesus, on that first Easter evening, as he stood among his disciples: “Peace be with you,” he said. After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:19-22

Lastly, let us heed the Apostle Paul, whose words have encouraged countless Christians for two thousand years: My brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:1,4-8

Let us pray
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, “Peace I give to you; my own peace I leave with you:” Bless this Peace Pole, that it may be a sign of your love; Grant that the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” be written on the hearts of all who see it; and Give to us the peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, now and for ever.
People Amen.

Holy water and incense are offered as the Celebrant blesses the Peace Pole.

Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace, as children of one Father; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
