\nAll Souls\u2019 Church – 88 Saint Nicholas Avenue @ 114th \u2013 115th Streets<\/p>\n
In Honor of Black History Month presents two films:<\/p>\n
\u201cMalcolm X\u201d
\nwith Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett
\nSunday Evening, February 21st at 7 PM<\/p>\n
The 1992 film is a stirring biographical drama about the life and meaning
\nof Malcolm X. Directed and co-written by Spike Lee, the film stars Denzel
\nWashington and Angela Bassett and dramatizes key events in Malcolm’s life,
\nincluding his incarceration, conversion to Islam, and ministry as a member
\nof the Nation of Islam. It is based largely on Alex Haley’s 1965 book,
\n\u201cThe Autobiography of Malcolm X,\u201d a book Haley collaborated on with
\nMalcolm beginning in 1963 and completing it after Malcolm\u2019s passing on
\nFebruary 21, 1965.<\/p>\n
\u201cGuess Who\u2019s Coming to Dinner\u201d
\nwith Sidney Poitier, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
\nSunday Afternoon, February 28th at 2 PM<\/p>\n
The 1967 film is about an older white couple (Katherine Hepburn and
\nSpencer Tracy) whose attitudes are challenged when their daughter
\nintroduces them to her African-American fianc\u00e9 (Sidney Poitier). The film
\ncontains a then rare positive representation of the subject of interracial
\nmarriage, which was still illegal in 17 (mostly Southern states) when the
\nfilm was released. \u201cGuess Who\u2019s Coming to Dinner\u201d – still a thought
\nprovoking film – won two Academy Awards and was a box-office hit
