Year 1 Office Readings for Saint Mathias Day (RSV)<\/strong><\/p>\n

MORNING PRAYER
\nA Reading from the First Book of Samuel (1 SAMUEL 16:1-13)
\nThe LORD said to Samuel, \u201cHow long will you grieve over Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.\u201d And Samuel said, \u201cHow can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.\u201d And the LORD said, \u201cTake a heifer with you, and say, \u2018I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.\u2019 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me him whom I name to you.\u201d Samuel did what the LORD commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, \u201cDo you come peaceably?\u201d And he said, \u201cPeaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD; consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.\u201d And he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he looked on Eli’ab and thought, \u201cSurely the LORD\u2019S anointed is before him.\u201d But the LORD said to Samuel, \u201cDo not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the LORD sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.\u201d Then Jesse called Abin’adab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, \u201cNeither has the LORD chosen this one.\u201d Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, \u201cNeither has the LORD chosen this one.\u201d And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, \u201cThe LORD has not chosen these.\u201d And Samuel said to Jesse, \u201cAre all your sons here?\u201d And he said, \u201cThere remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.\u201d And Samuel said to Jesse, \u201cSend and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he comes here.\u201d And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. And the LORD said, \u201cArise, anoint him; for this is he.\u201d Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.<\/p>\n

A Reading from the First Letter of John (1 JOHN 2:18-25)
\nChildren, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all know. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and know that no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he has promised us, eternal life.<\/p>\n

EVENING PRAYER

\nSamuel said to all Israel, \u201cBehold, I have hearkened to your voice in all that you have said to me, and have made a king over you. And now, behold, the king walks before you; and I am old and gray, and behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth until this day. Here I am; testify against me before the LORD and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose ass have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me and I will restore it to you.\u201d They said, \u201cYou have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man\u2019s hand.\u201d And he said to them, \u201cThe LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.\u201d And they said, \u201cHe is witness.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (ACTS 20:17-35)
\nFrom Mile’tus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: \u201cYou yourselves know how I lived among you all the time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which befell me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance to God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, bound in the Spirit, not knowing what shall befall me there; except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may accomplish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. And now, behold, I know that all you among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom will see my face no more. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me.
