Calling all visual artists

As part of the Arts Jam festival on Saturday September 6th, I will be organizing a fine arts show to be displayed in the church. If you have any drawings, paintings, prints, photography or sculpture that you would like to contribute, please contact me at church or at artistvet@aol. com. Submissions should be made by August 24th and should be matted/framed and ready to hang (if you need help with this, let me know). Children and young adult artists are strongly encouraged to participate!

Sunday, August 3 – MAJOR FOOD COLLECTION DAY

This Sunday the Gospel passage is the Feeding of the 5000.  This miracle of Jesus (feeding 5000 people from only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish) is something that we can try to mirror in our own lives by supporting our partner Food Pantry at the CCNW.  Perhaps buying and donating food is less miraculous, but the support of the hungry is the exact same.  With that in mind I invite you join my family this Sunday in bringing in several items for the Food Pantry.  The summer is a notoriously difficult time for many food pantries – people who donate go on vacation or take time off, but those who rely on the food pantry still need to eat.  The Food Pantry depends on donations of food, and the items they tend to need the most are:

Canned fruit and vegetables
Dried and canned beans
Hot and cold cereal
Tuna and canned meat
Cans of soup, beef stew and chili
Pasta, rice and spaghetti sauce
Peanut butter and jelly
Fruit juice
Baby food and diapers
Dry or shelf-stable milk

If everyone brings in 5 boxes of pasta and two cans of fish (or something  else that isn’t quite so obviously parallel to the Gospel), we could make a wonderful summer donation to the food pantry.  If you are at the store in the next few days, please take the opportunity to buy something for the CCNW Food Pantry!  I am off to Trader Joe’s to pick some things us right now!  See you Sunday!!!

Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

CCNW Food Pantry needs cereal!

The food pantry at the Community Center of Northern Westchester has put out a call for cereal, as they are running very low. As you do your shopping this week, please consider picking up an extra box or two of cereal for CCNW, and then just drop your donation in the basket at COGS on Sunday. Thank you!

Sad News: Rest in Peace Greg Shearn

Dear Friends, Greg Shearn, husband of Linda Shearn died today.  Please keep Greg, Linda, the entire Shearn family and all of their friends in your prayers.

The Shearns were long time members of Good Shepherd, who had moved to Pennsylvania several years ago. The news comes via Bernie Sotter, who along with many others in the parish, is good friends with the Shearns.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our brother Greg. We thank you for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In the midst of life we are in death; from whom can we seek help? From you alone, O Lord.

I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord. Whoever has faith in me shall have life, even though he die. And everyone who has life, and has committed himself to me in faith, shall not die for ever. As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives and that at the last he will stand upon the earth. After my awaking, he will raise me up; and in my body I shall see God. I myself shall see, and my eyes behold him who is my friend and not a stranger. For none of us has life in himself, and none becomes his own master when he dies. For if we have life, we are alive in the Lord, and if we die, we die in the Lord. So, then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s possession. Happy from now on are those who die in the Lord! So it is, says the Spirit, for they rest from their labors.

O God, the King of saints, we praise and glorify your holy Name for all your servants who have finished their course in your faith and fear: for the blessed Virgin Mary; for the holy patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs; and for all your other righteous servants, known to us and unknown; and we pray that, encouraged by their examples, aided by their prayers, and strengthened by their fellowship, we also may be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ruth Macreery Funeral: Saturday, July 12, 11AM.

Dear friends,

Ruth Macreery died June 12, 2014.  Ruth was a long time parishioner and daughter of Otto Koegel & Rae Fisher Koegel who were great benefactors to and members of Good Shepherd.  Her funeral will be at Good Shepherd on July 12, Saturday, 11AM.  Your prayers and presence are requested.  Please keep Ruth’s family and friends in your prayers.

Amen.

Father of all, we pray to you for those we love, but see no longer: Grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon them; and, in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rest In Peace, Rachael Levy

Dear Friends, Rachael Levy, mother of Phi Levy has passed away.  Please keep Rachel, Phil, and the entire Levy family in your prayers.

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day
our sister Rachael. We thank you for giving her to us, her
family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on
our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion,
console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate
of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue
our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with
those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of
death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where
you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep
peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your
tender mercies’ sake. Amen.

Father of all, we pray to you for those we love, but see no
longer: Grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon
them; and, in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work
in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
